Mackies Ice Cream Wrapper

The Brief

Based in Aberdeenshire luxury ice cream producers, Mackie’s of Scotland wanted to replaced their existing aged shrink wrapping equipment. Not only old, but not keeping up current levels of production, difficult to use and taking up valuable space in the packing area which could be better utilised. Two machines were required and had to be capable of collating and wrapping their 2 litre ice cream pots and also the trays of individual pots.

The Solution

Jeremy Frith, Technical Director at Shrinkwrap met the challenge head on and created a brand new design of shrink wrapper for the dairy, food and drink industry. Challenging existing principals and delivering a solution that fully exceeded the Mackie’s team expectations.

The two machines were to be fabricated in stainless steel, as is usual in the dairy industry. All completed in house by the team at Shrinkwrap. The equipment comprised of two fully automatic side entry sleeve wrappers with a 650mm wide sealing system. The collation system comprised of a pusher unit to row up product from a single line feed, prior to the infeed of the shrink wrapper. 10 packs per minute per machine) was achieved with the final design.

The major space saving came from the complete redesign of the heat tunnel. Through careful and considered judgement, Jeremy produced a design which gave a compact shrink tunnel that was both effective and efficient in its energy usage with only a 16kW power requirement.

The Outcome

“We were impressed from the first meeting we had with Shrinkwrap Machinery Co Ltd regarding our requirements, specifically their attention paid to detail.  The price was also very competitive, hence why we placed an order for two machines to replace our existing equipment on site here in Aberdeenshire.

The shrink wrap machines meet our needs completely and the compact size of the machine gives us more space in the packing area which is an added benefit. Our staff are delighted with new machine as it is so much simpler to use. Our wrapped packs are much better quality and the speed of the machine can now keep up with production.”

An absolutely great team, nothing but praise for them.  Really the whole project has been so straight forward, it could not have been better.”
